Frequently Asked Questions About 'Better Barns' Barn Design

Are your yard barns pre-fabricated?

No! It seems most people understand the term, “pre-fab” to mean a completely built barn which is then shipped and dropped off a truck onto the property. We DO NOT pre-fab. We start with raw pine or cedar and construct the primary barn walls in our controlled shop environment, bring it to your site and build it there; from the leveling blocks to the floor to the walls, windows and roof complete with shingles. Our seasoned craftsmen carry the barn walls and materials onto the yard site so it can be positioned anywhere you want it. Because we can erect your building anywhere on your property, behind the flower beds or rock garden, in a fenced-in pool area, up a little path, or over a foot bridge, your options are greatly increased. Most companies deliver pre-built and can only put the building where the delivery truck can go but not where you want it!

Are there any unique features about your barns?

Yes. There are many which you should familiarize yourself when selecting a yard building company:
Premium Quality... is apparent from the inception of construction details which have been perfected in nearly 30 years of update and improvement. We hand select the finest quality pine and cedar which is and sawn expertly to assure proper fit of every piece.

All exposed fasteners are galvanized nails or screws.
Pressure treated lumber is used for floor joists; three-quarter inch tongue-in-grove fir plywood is used for flooring. (Many other yard buildings only use half-inch plywood). Plus, we only use treated lumber for our floor joists.

We offer architectural style roof shingles, (which look like wood shingles), and are available in a variety of colors.

The natural beauty and durability of cedar is used in many of our barns. Cedar is resistance to insects as well as the elements makes it the obvious selection for Better Barns.

Even if you purchase our pine barn, we automatically include cedar doors.

Quick remove windows provide fast and easy removal for cleaning or just easy open to enjoy a breeze.

Our barns are architecturally proportioned to the classic New England barn look and style.

We can provide full truss design to add a storage loft while allowing convenient walk-under height.
Our barn walls are truly extra strength because we take the time and care to construct with notched assembly and overall attention to detail, all delivering a huge benefit of long-lasting durability.

Every yard building we offer is hand crafted in our Bethlehem wood shop. There’s no assembly line or automated process. We believe in the old saying, “the life is in the wood.” Our craftsmen assure that the natural beauty and strength remain in the wood--handled with respect, skill and talent they create masterpieces of enduring value.

Where can we actually see your barn models in person?

We have found over many years that our barns sell themselves after people compare them by actually seeing what other yard barn companies offer. The quality, beauty, construction advantages and style easily outshine what is out there. You can visit our model center or stop by any of our display models at home centers locations.

Do you help us determine the best place to position the barn on our property?

The finished barn is going to serve you well not only because of the quality and craftsmanship but because we conduct a thorough site inspection at the outset in order to assure the proper placement. There is no additional fee for this service.

Do you build barns only in Connecticut?

We typically build barns within 200 radius of Bethlehem, CT. A small fee of $7.50 per loaded mile beyond 35 miles is standard. Within 35 miles there are no delivery or installation fees.

Do we need a Building Permit for a yard building?

Obtaining a permit is the homeowner’s responsibility. We will construct your barn with or without one. If you go for a permit we can simplify the process by providing the drawings.

What are your payment terms?

Once you’ve made a decision on the barn style you want, we take a deposit to hold your place in our delivery schedule. Once the barn is scheduled we will contact you. As soon as we schedule your barn we cannot refund your deposit because at that point we are actually building your barn. The balance is due on the day we complete your barn on site. We do accept MasterCard and Visa credit cards.
